William Morris is known as the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement. Morris and Company was founded in April of 1861 with the goal of making this style well crafted and affordable. William Morris was an enemy to the machine. He felt that the beauty of a piece should be in it's simplicity and honesty of the material. He was quoted as saying, "Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."

Some of the designers of this time included Mackmurdo, Godwin, Gimson, and Voysey. Most all of the furniture pieces of this time were simple and had honesty of materials. The beauty of craftsmanship showed in joinery as well as finishes. Mackmurdo was on the edge of Art Nouveau but still maintained the simplicity of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

The Red House was designed by Philip Webb for William Morris. It was given its name because of the warm red colors of the exterior. This home was different from any other home because it was designed from the inside out where as most other building before this time were built by squeezing the interior to fit the exterior. William Morris also designed a very famous chair for the Arts and Crafts Movement called the Morris chair.

The Arts and Crafts Movement affected the style of everything, including architecture, kitchen utensils, fashion, greeting cards, book bindings, and the opera. This was also a style that would later influence Frank Lloyd Wright. The Arts and Crafts Movement followed the Victorian period which was lavish and over done, with design motifs selected at random. Because of new technology, furniture was mass produced, increasing the quantity of poorly designed objects. The Arts and Crafts Movement allowed style and craftsmanship to return.
