The Flatiron Building in New York was designed in 1902 by Daniel Bunham, who is quoted as saying, "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir mens minds. The triangular shape, which is similar to a cow catcher, of the building completely fills the lot. It remains untouched by other structures, Providing the opportunity for ornamentation on all sides. The Flatiron Building is the cornerstone and namesake of New Yorks Flatiron District.

Michael Thonet, a cabinet maker from Germany, was the first to create bentwood furniture. He started bending wood veneer strips and also discovered that solid beech wood could be bent into furniture. He brought furniture making from the work-shop to the factory without destroying the spirit of craftsmanship. Thonet used technology and craft to produce great design which is still used today.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the World's Fair in 1889, and the people had every intention to take it down after the fair was over. However because of its size it proved useful to the city. The public hated the tower because it was much taller than any other structure around but they soon got used to the engineering masterpiece which has become a major tourist attraction.

The Bridge over the Firth of Forth was designed in 1889 by Benjamin Baker and John Fowler. Also known as Scotland's Forth Bridge, it connects Edinburgh with the north of Scotland. The first plan for the bridge was to be a suspension bridge, but was later changed to a cantilever bridge. The bridge was completed the same year as the Eiffel Tower. Scotland's Forth Bridge carries trains over a mile and a half of water. This was one of the first great constructions to prove that a steel structure could have a beauty of its own.
